Unlike the past, when most of the innovative technologies originated from the defense and security research, nowadays most innovative technologies result from the new global competitive economy and the worldwide consumers demand. The outcome is increased proliferation of available smart and creative technologies (as opposed to emerging technologies not yet available) that could be easily adapted to security applications (e.g. remote screening, control, communication, protection, new types of sensors, to name just a few).
This could be a weak signal of the use of cheap components by terrorists to create sophisticated threats.
